A Message from Our President

This is an exciting time in basic medical research with the completion of sequencing of the human genome. And during the last year, it is encouraging to see there appears to be more basic research interest in CLL and more drugs in clinical trials than ever before. For those with CLL, or family or friends with CLL, this is an important time to do everything possible to accelerate the CLL research effort so to improve their lives and being able to say they were cured of this disease.

Although there are a number of organizations that have been working for many years towards our mutual goal of curing leukemia and other blood-related cancers, we hope our foundation can play a special role by greatly enhancing CLL research. We will not try to duplicate their efforts in devoting part of our contributions toward patient advocacy, support and education. They are already doing an excellent job in these areas. Our foundation is dedicated solely to accelerating the search for a cure for CLL. When you contribute to this foundation you will know that 100% of your money will be targeted for CLL research. Our Foundation`s approach to awarding research grants is unique as we look to our Scientific Advisory Board composed of scientists and clinicians from both academics, government and the drug industry. It is hoped with this approach research opportunities will be identified which may be overlooked by traditional advisory boards.

We hope that CLL patients will appreciate the direction of our foundation, and we would like their comments on how the foundation should proceed and what should be the content of our web site. We would like CLL patients to think of this foundation as their personal organization. We need your help and support. Volunteers with experience in fundraising and developing our web site are needed. We are looking for additional Directors from different geographical regions. And, of course we would appreciate your contributions.

This web site will be narrow in its focus and will not repeat what is found on other web sites on cancer and leukemia. We will attempt to fulfill the needs of the CLL patient with information not readily accessible from those sites - you will not need to grow through numerous links to find the information you need. Our Scientific Advisory Board members will inform you about the direction of CLL research and preliminary information that is not yet published. Additionally, we soon hope to have in place a comprehensive section devoted to pharmaceutical company-sponsored clinical trials for CLL. Descriptions of these clinical trials are many times more difficult to find than NCI-sponsored trials. We hope our web site will be a useful conduit between CLL patients and for patient recruitment by the trial sponsors.

Thank you for visiting our new website and best of health to you.
