Our Scientific Advisory Board

An important element of our foundation is our scientific/medical advisory board whose principle responsibility is to determine how contributions will be dispersed on research grants. Our goal is to make certain that your contributions will be directed in the most appropriate and efficient manner in having an impact on accelerating the discovery of a cure for CLL.

Our Scientific Advisory Board is unique and distinct from other medical research foundations in that it is composed of clinicians with experience within traditional academic/medical institutions, government (FDA and NIH), complementary medicine, as well as scientists from the drug development industry. It is hoped that this broad perspective will give new insights into novel therapeutic approaches for drug development.

In brief overview, on our Board we have two members from Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp.*, which is responsible for Gleevec, a new significant treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia that is considered by some the "most revolutionary treatment for cancer in the last 25 years." We also have as a Board member the clinician who, while at the National Cancer Institute, was instrumental in the initial development of fludarabine, the most frequently used drug for CLL. The staging criteria of CLL was defined by another Board member and is named after him. Another Board member's research interest is in the genetics of the transformation of CLL into more aggressive forms of cancer. And lastly, we have a clinician on our Board who has broad knowledge of alternative and complementary medicine. Two of our Board members are also lead investigators for the NIH sponsored, CLL Research Consortium.
